TikTok Shop and digital products
No: you can’t sell an ebook, a pack of templates or a downloadable file through TikTok Shop in the European Union. The EU TikTok Shop prohibited products policy, whose displayed last update is dated 6 August 2026, files under “media products — not supported”: “digital downloads of books, magazines, newspapers, music, videos”.
This isn’t a setting to switch on or a follower threshold to cross. The good news is that selling files never needed TikTok Shop in the first place: it happens on your own page, and TikTok keeps the role it plays best — bringing you the people. Here’s what the policy actually says, the three workarounds that end badly, and the route that works.

What the policy says, word for word
The text sits in the TikTok Shop seller centre, on the page listing prohibited products for the EU. Its “media products” category separates what is supported from what isn’t, and files under not supported the digital downloads of books, magazines, newspapers, music and videos.
Two honesty notes, because they decide what you can actually do. First, that list names categories: there is no line saying “any downloadable file”. Second, it is dated and it moves — the version quoted here is the one from 6 August 2026. If your product doesn’t look like any of the categories named, the question isn’t settled by reading an article: it’s settled by reading the policy on the day you open your shop, and by accepting that the absence of a mention is not a permission.
Why it’s structural, not an oversight
TikTok Shop is built around an object you ship: a weight, a carrier, a tracking number, a delivery window, a return period, a dispute when the parcel doesn’t arrive. Everything — from the product listing to buyer protection — is indexed on that cycle.
A file has none of it. It’s delivered in three seconds, it doesn’t get returned, it doesn’t get lost. Forcing it into parcel machinery means paying for logistics you don’t have — and giving up exactly the advantage a digital product had in the first place.
The three workarounds, and what they cost
1 Ship an object that contains the file
A printed card with a QR code, a USB stick. That isn’t a workaround: it’s a genuine physical selling business, with printing, postage, delays and returns. It can make sense for an expensive, carefully made product; on a pack under €15, the print and the stamp come out of your margin on every single sale — while the whole point of a digital product was not to pay them.2 List a physical product and deliver a file
The listing then doesn’t describe what the buyer receives. That’s a misleading description, and it’s the fastest way to collect disputes and then lose the shop — taking with it the audience you spent months building.3 Wait for TikTok to change its mind
The policy is public and dated: it can change, and nothing says in which direction. Building your only sales channel on a hoped-for update means letting someone else decide the date of your first sale.
What works instead: the link
Selling files from TikTok has always worked the same way, and it needs no approval from anyone: a video people care about, a link to a page that sells, a payment, a file delivered by email. TikTok brings the audience, your page does the rest.
1 Make your link clickable
The external link in your bio is only clickable from 1,000 followers on a personal account — or right away with a TikTok Business account, which is free and switched on in your profile settings.2 Until then, pin a comment
Under the video that shows your product, post your shop address as a comment and pin it. It isn’t clickable, but it sits at the top, and it works today.3 Point it at the product page, not at an index
The link should land on the page that carries the buying decision — title, price, preview, button. Every intermediate screen costs you buyers who just watched a whole video about it.4 Deliver automatically
A file you email by hand that evening isn’t delivery, it’s a promise. Automatic delivery after payment is what makes the sale repeatable while you sleep — and it’s the minimum your buyer expects from a digital product.
The detail on the 1,000-follower threshold and the pinned comment is in the link in bio article. And to choose where to collect the money, the platform fees comparison puts the fees read on each platform’s own pricing page side by side.
What you keep by selling outside the Shop
Leaving the Shop isn’t a consolation prize. On your own page you set your price with no imposed grid, your product isn’t one listing among thousands competing for the same placement, and you don’t depend on a product category that’s allowed one day and pulled the next. Your video can do 300 views or 300,000: the path to the sale stays the same.
If you haven’t decided what to sell yet, the “what to sell on TikTok” tool suggests three formats for your niche with their price range. If you’re unsure about the amount, the price calculator gives you the range. And if the real question is “I don’t have a website”, selling a digital product without a website compares the three ways to do without one.

Common questions.
What about the US — does TikTok Shop accept digital products there?+
The rules quoted here are the ones for TikTok Shop in the European Union. Product policies differ from one market to the next and change without notice: the only source that counts for you is the seller centre for your country, on the day you read it.
My product is neither a book nor a video — a Notion template, say.+
The policy names categories of downloads and opens no general exception for “files”. Building your sales channel on the absence of a mention means building on an interpretation nobody at TikTok has confirmed to you. An external link doesn’t depend on any reading: it works whatever category your product falls into.
Does TikTok take a cut if I sell through an external link?+
No: a sale made on your own page doesn’t go through TikTok Shop, so TikTok takes nothing from it. The fees you pay are your selling platform’s and your payment processor’s — with Stripe, 1.5% + €0.25 for a standard European card, per its published pricing.
Can I put my shop address in the video caption?+
You can, but it won’t be clickable there: your viewer has to retype it. A pinned comment does the same job while staying at the top of the comments, and the link in bio remains the only clickable version.
